Evaluation Q7

Looking back at your primarily task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

I have learnt a lot about the programs and how they work throughout the course of the tasks, so from learning more as I went along my music magazine is of a higher standard than my school magazine.

This is my final school magazine cover, it looks really plain and simple and doesn't look very professional. There is no barcode (but on a school magazine you don't need one), there are no cover lines or puffs to show what is going to be included in the magazine and there is no colour coordination. There are white boarders around my title and logo which makes it look messy and untidy.

Not a lot of planing went into my front cover and contents pages as I wasn't sure of what I wanted my magazine to look like and I didn't know what I wanted to include.

A lot more thought, planning and research went into my music magazine, as I knew more on what was expected of me and I wanted a better out come than the one I got from my school magazine.

There is a lot more detail in my music magazine as there is a barcode, cover lines, puffs and sell lines on my front cover. More thought went into my masthead as i was trying to create the theme and genre of country on my magazine.

I spent more time researching the type of music magazine i wanted to produce so i could see what was successful and what was not, on a music magazine.

When making this magazine i had a lot more confidence with the programs and sites in which i had to use to complete the task. Which helped a lot when it came to actually making the final magazine cover, contents and double page spread.

Also by having more time to complete the music magazine helped so i had more time to research the genres and make the magazine, and i was able to add more detail to my own research.

Over all I learnt that knowing how to use the programs and having primary and secondary research to look back on is key in making a good quality magazine. I am happy with how my music magazine turned out and I think it reflects well from the work in which i produced.

Evaluation Q1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Mise-en-scene
Through my images I have shown that it is a country/pop magazine as Chloe is wearing an MTV top to how the pop aspect of the magazine. Georgina is wearing a check shirt and neutral coloured chinos which shows the country side of the magazine, I also included a guitar to also add to the country aspect of the magazine. I decided to use a plain wall in the background so that the target audience is focused on the artist and nothing else. I have chosen quite a light area to take my pictures as my magazine is quite has quite a light mood to it and isn't generally a dark genre of music.
Contents Page
My contents page is generally short as listing all of my content as listing all the articles would make the reader uninterested in the magazine. My contents page contains band logos so that the reader is aware of who is featured in the magazine, it includes images of the artist to show the artist a 'seek peak' of what is included, and i have also chosen to write a list of some of the key features of the magazine.
Layout
I have used a general layout in which most successful magazines used which corresponds to the 'z' rule. I have decided not to pack loads of information and text in to the magazine as people don't want a long piece of text as from experience and feed back from my target audience it is better to have 'the facts' than 'an essay'. I have also changed my colour scheme from the original beige and browns as it looked to dark and 'sameish' so I chose to change it to a bright red, white and black.
Text
I have chosen to use my double page spread for most of the magazine's written content and not placed a lot of text on my contents page as when I did it was too cramped and crowded so it did not look professional. the type of content I have included is quite informal as it resembles a celebrity interview, so it is meant to have an informal approach to it.
Fonts
The font in which i have included are not very consistent as each part of the magazine it quite different and from my research i have seen that only some of the fonts are consistent but they use different ones to get a different response from the reader.
People
I decided to use these 4 people as they all currently do media studies and all know what is needed of them to help me complete my magazine, I have used them in two different photo shoots to show variation within my magazine, and to meet the criteria of the task. I decided to use Rebecca and Georgina for the country part of the magazine as they had to right types of clothes and Abbie and Chloe had the right kind of clothes for the pop part of the magazine.
Clothes & Props
I chose to have them where checked shirts and simple white top to show the genre of the music magazine. I also used a guitar in my pictures as most country even some pop magazines use guitars in their pictures to show the genre of the magazine. I also included a microphone implying that she was singing/practicing the single.
Title
For my title I called it Strings and I used a very simple font that conveys the look of string and links to the fact the it is a country/pop magazine and most country/pop artists use and play guitars.

Final Double Page Spread

This is my final double page spread, I have decided to include four pictures of Georgina as from my research I have seen that most double page spreads include images of the artist. I chose to place a background colour as after getting feed back from my target audience they all said that the background was too plain and needed a background colour. I asked Georgina 7 questions as it seemed like a reasonable amount of text to include on a double page spread and it didn't crowd the page too much.

Final Front Cover & Contents

Masthead - I chose the name Strings as it gave the right impression of my magazine, as it is a country magazine and most country artists can play guitars and guitars are linked with country music. I also chose this name as it was the most popular on my questionnaire and it was the title I most liked out of the options. In the background I have placed the guitar frets and strings to add to the effect of the masthead, I also decided to use it in the background as it makes it stand out and noticeable.

Slogan - I have decided to include a short punchy slogan to make the magazine more appealing, as that one line gives the audience an insight to what can be expected from inside the magazine. Not many country magazines have slogans so i thought by including one my magazine would be different from others, making it unique.

Price - I have decided to place the price in the top right hand corner as according to the 'z rule'  this would be second place the readers eyes will look when picking up the magazine, so hopefully the reader will see that the magazine is a reasonable price for the content of the magazine and be more inclined to buy the magazine.

Main Image - The main image that I have used doesn't have any major connection with the genre - country, I decided to use this picture as it was good quality and a mid shot image. I liked the picture as Rebecca was looking right down the camera creating a connection with the person reading the magazine and the artist.

Barcode - The barcode is placed at the bottom right hand corner of the front cover, so according to the 'z rule' it is the last thing that the readers eyes will look at, so it wont distract/obscure the readers eye line.

Sell Lines - I have included sell lines so the reader can see what is included in the magazine and giving them a quick insight to what expect, helping the audience decided whether they would be interested in buying the magazine.

Layout - I like the layout of my magazine as it isn't too crowded/busy but there is enough information to entice the reader to buy the magazine.

Puff - I have included a puff on the front of my music magazine as it gives a little bit of information/an insight to want you should expect in the magazine, I have used the word 'you' to make it more personal and create a connection with the reader. I have said 'keep warm while you listen with these must haves!!' i used the words 'while you listen' to tie into the magazine genre.

Images - I have decided to include images of Abbie, Chloe, Georgina and Rebecca to create an interest in the reader by making them see the pictures and want to know what they are about. I chose them four pictures as they suited what they are being used for, and I edited Abbie's picture to make it look like a album cover so that it links to the page containing 'UK Top 40 Albums'. I included the page numbers under the picture so the audience doesn't have to look through the whole magazine to find that article.

Page Numbers -  I have included the page numbers down the left side of the page to make it look neat and professional. There are page numbers as I didn't include the adverts and posters in the contents page because it would of been too crowded, unprofessional and not what the readers are interested in.

Font - I decided to use that font as it was the same one that I used for the title/masthead of the magazine so it linked to the front cover. I made the font size 25 so that it filled up the page but wasn't too small or too big.

Layout - I have decided to include band and singer names corresponding to who is included in the magazine. I have also decided to include them to introduce another element to the contents page and make it look more interesting.

Print Screens Creating Front Cover

These are the step by step print screens of me creating my music magazine front cover, I will be explaining what I have done and at the end why I did it.
This is a print screen of me creating my front cover in InDesign.
This is a print screen of my banner, I decided to use the background as guitar strings and I kept the name in which my questionnaire had produced.
This is a print screen of me inserting my price that the people that answered my questionnaire had asked for and the slogan in which I thought of while making the magazine.
This is a print screen of me inserting a picture and text of what is going to be included in the magazine to entice the audience to buy and read the magazine.
This is a print screen of me inserting a puff, I have used a puff to include different types of shapes and colours to catch the audiences eye.
This is a print screen of me adding in the headlines, corresponding to the main image.
This is a print screen of my finished front cover.
I have decided to remake my front cover and my contents page as the colours were not consistant enough and I was unhappy with what I had produced. So instead of creating my magazine cover in picmonkey I made my front cover in InDesign, and just edited my pictures on picmonkey. By doing this I have created a more consistant magazine cover and contents page, also I have changed my first choices of colours as I didn't like the colour scheme.
